The fight is on against tax havens!

Each year, some Canadian citizens and businesses use tax havens to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. According to an independent study, tax havens cost Canada between $5.3 billion and $7.8 billion in revenue each year.

Although it has been proven that investments in investigating white-collar crime pay for themselves many times over, the Conservatives pigheadedly cut the number of investigators at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Enough is enough.

The NDP is the only party with the independence to fight tax havens. Justin Trudeau campaigned with Paul Martin to gain credibility on the economy, but the former prime minister arranged to avoid paying taxes in Canada by basing his Canada Steamship Lines ships in Barbados. A bad example was set at the top. The Liberals have no credibility on this issue.

As for the Conservatives, they cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the CRA’s budget and eliminated dozens of inspector positions.

The NDP is calling on the government to do everything it can to fight tax evasion and the use of tax havens, including:

- investing in the CRA in order to catch individuals and businesses who avoid or evade taxes;

- giving the Parliamentary Budget Officer the mandate to study the problem; and

- asking the Auditor General of Canada to assess the practices and effectiveness of the CRA.

Canada has to do what it takes to stop tax fraud. An NDP government will fight tax evasion.
